This unusual, but intriguing question is one I keep discussing with my team...
What does progress mean for you?
How do we know if we are progressing or regressing?
Can any of us accurately determine which state we are in right now?
Let's look at our good ole friend Jeff Bezos.
Amazon didn’t make a penny of profits for years,
Back in 1999, Jeff was a fool to everyone who followed Mr. Warren Buffett’s investment philosophy so rigidly.
So, how did Jeff know in all that time if the company was progressing or not?
The first thing you might think is there needs to be some goal that one strives towards,
so we can progressively compare our current state with our ultimate goal.
And I’d say, "you're right!",
I think we can all agree no one just drifts to their ultimate destination, one must sail to the destination, steering the sails, and course correcting...
And those who can’t make up their mind on where they want to go... are doomed.
I see the most interesting thing happening...
Somewhere in the last couple of years, a lot of business owners have acquired what I call "Gear Acquisition Syndrome"
Where they delude themselves thinking they are making progress by acquiring more "gear."
So they go to the market collecting gear,
Meaning:
While justifying to themselves I’m making progress as I'm gathering more stuff, more information, and resources that might help me.
BUT — the reality is otherwise.
They are actually running away from the dip (the slow and hard progress you make when the novelty wears off)
When you start mastering, let's say "Copywriting",
It's all good and exciting, you are making leaps of progress initially but after sometime novelty wears off...
And the dip has set in,
Now you must work harder to make little progress, that little fleeting reward isn't that exciting anymore.
"It's all the SAME!" you might say...(actually that's the first symptom of Gear Acquisition Syndrome)
Most people at that time will start postponing action and instead they will look for something else or they might buy more gear about some other topic they always wanted to feel like making progress,
BUT now you & I can understand they are not really making progress.
So, how do we push past "the dip" to reach our ultimate goal and avoid getting infected by this ugly "syndrome".
Part of the solution lies in celebrating the little rewards with an encouraging community, because they multiply the fun and excitement when we are in a "dip."
It gives us a place to relate, interact, and lean on others travelling on the same journey as you.
and the other part lies in having a step by step action plan that is proven by hundreds of others just like yourself...
